Newport is great place to visit if you'd like to go to a beach town without all of the pomp and circumstance of the Hamptons. It's best to visit in the summer when you can take advantage of the outdoor bars near the beach. For a really fun afternoon, go the the Atlantic Beach Club by First beach to listen to the outdoor bands (such as Mark Morris and the Cattunes) and grab a frozen drink at the bar.
