I grew up here, so maybe my opinion is a bit biased. As a vacation destination, it's difficult to recommend over its much larger and well-known statemate Las Vegas, but Reno has a number of advantages. It's casinos are (mostly) confined to the downtown area, giving it a more homey feel - you almost feel like you are in a normal city rather than the amusement park feel of Vegas. There are also many other outdoor activities, especially Lake Tahoe for skiing in the winter, which is only an hour  more...
