Part of Mazatlan’s appeal is that it would survive swimmingly without tourism. Booming industries like the Pacifico Brewery, the largest seaport in Mexico, and an 800-boat commercial shrimp fleet operate at full-bore behind Zona Dorada (golden zone) where all the resorts are concentrated, but most travelers never even know that such lively saltwater commerce lies just beyond.
