The first inhabitants of Quito were strong, courageous natives, who were first crushed by the Incas and latter on by the Spaniards. However, from the conquistadors time the city has been breath taking, quiet literally. The city is built on the dormant volcano Pichincha, so that it is so high up that sometimes when you get off the plane you have to catch your breath due to the altitude.
