I have two words for Beijing: squat toilets. If you can manage to balance yourself over what amounts to a porcelain-lined hole in the ground, you’ll do just fine in Beijing. Beijing is a city in the midst of an explosion—building cranes are everywhere and Westernization is rampant, so if you want to see the last vestiges of a Communist country, go now.
Unless you feel comfortable navigating a subway, know some Chinese, are on a tour, or have friends who live there (as we did), your best bet
